Help to level the playing field

Provide clarity to students; answer questions and advise them on how you got to where you are

Mentors give the platform a further way to advance students 'social capital' rather than just giving them information about college courses. By volunteering, you provide a tangible outlet and contact to our users. From providing guidance to helping with applications, this is a network to help those who need it.

What's involved

Every little helps

There's no minimum commitment, sign up and just be available and open to speaking with 2nd and 3rd level students.

Talks in Schools

We are hoping to extend our reach by hosting talks in schools, going over networking, job hunting and career pathways with junior students and giving them an idea about 'social capital'. Volunteers for talks are welcome but not necessary.

Easy Commitment

Once you sign up and your name is on the directory, users will be able to contact you. If it gets to the stage where you are being contacted too often, you can freeze your profile to new users

The idea behind the platform

Some of the people I met in my first job already had everything planned out. They had laid out the groundwork, with law firm trainee contracts waiting for them; these sons and daughters of solicitors knew exactly what to do to get a traineeship at a big firm (and it probably helped that they knew a few people inside those firms too). I had supportive parents, but in this job market it isn't only about wanting it. It helps to know someone who'll give you that first chance. Social Capital is for people who don't have the same phonebook.

This is what a student sees on your profile. Name your employer if you want to — “Solicitor, Dublin firm” works just as well as naming it, and some people need permission before being publicly attached to a scheme.
